Dear Mr Heimer,
Thank you for the fine arrangements that were made for me last December. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay this December. I will arrive on the morning of December 7 and hope that a room can be used from noon. I will leave on the morning of December 12.I would very much appreciate it if you could arrange for a ground-level oceanfront room.
Thank you again for everything you have done to make my previous stays memorable.
Sincerely yours,
Wang Gang

M: Jenny, I'm going to stop smoking when I finish this cigarette.
W: But why don't you stop now?
M: You're right! I'll stop now
(Text 2)
M: Let's hurry up. The train will leave at 8:10.
W: Don't worry. We'll be able to get on the train on time. There is still 15 minutes left.
(Text 3)
W: I'm going to the supermarket to buy some food.
M: You'd better decide what you need to buy at home.
W: Let me make a shopping list, two chickens, some cabbages
M: Have you got enough money?
W: I'll stop at the bank on my way to the supermarket.
(Text 4)
M: May I drop in at your house after the concert or can that be too late?
W: No. Not at all.
(Text 5)
W: Are you doing the football pools?
M: Yes. I'm sure that we shall win something this time.
W: You always say that. But what will you do if you win this time?
M: I'll buy you a mink coat.
W: But I want to see the world.
M: All right. I agree with you.
(Text 6)
W: I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but I don't know what it is.
M: Do you have your passport, Mrs Jones?
W: Yes. I have it right here. And I have the boat tickets. What else could it be?
M: You've all your suitcases here, don't you?
W: I believe so. Let's see. One…two…three…four. Yes, they are here.
M: Well, it seems to me you gave everything you'll need, Mrs. Jones.
W: No, I don't. Something is missing, but I can't think what it would be.
M: Don't worry about it, now. By the way, where is Mr. Jones?
W: Oh, I forgot my husband.
(Text 7)
W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?
M: I want to buy a coat.
W: I'll get some more out for you. How is this kind? I think this coat should fit you. You can take it over to the mirror and try it on.
M: By the way, is this material all wool?
W: Yes, sir. The coat fits you very nicely.
M: But I think the sleeves are a little too long.
W: We can shorten the sleeves for you. Alternations are free. You can pick the coat up tomorrow afternoon.
M: How much is it?
W: You are very lucky, sir. That coat is on sale this week. It's only thirty—nine now. Last week it was forty—five dollars.
M: All right. I'll take it.
W: I think you've made a wise choice, sir.
(Text 8)
M: Mary, what's date today?
W: Let me see. It's the thirteenth.
M: I thought it was!
W: Yes. I have promised Ann a game of tennis this evening.
M: Oh? I thought they were mending your tennis-courts.
W: They’ve already finished the work. The club opened again last night. But why did you ask me the date? Isn’t it on the newspaper you’re reading?
M: Let me look. It is not today’s paper.
W: Oh? I thought it was.
M: I wondered why the news seemed old. It’s yesterday’s.
W: Really, Bill! That's just as good for finding today's date, isn't it?
M: All right, all right! I'm stupid again! Where is today's paper, anyway?
W: I haven't seen it. Is there any important news in it?
M: How do I know? I haven't read today's paper yet. I really want it to find out what films are showing this week.
W: Oh, I see.
M: I thought perhaps you would come with me to see a film on Saturday.
W: I’ love to, but I'm afraid I can’t. I’ going back home for the weekend.
(Text 9)
M: When is your vacation going to start?
W: I’ll be leaving on the fifth of August.
M: That’s only a few days from now. How many weeks are you going to be taking?
W: I’m taking two weeks now, but I want to save the other week and take it sometime during the winter.
M: Where are you going now?
W: To the beach.
M: Have you made your hotel reservation yet?
W: Oh, I don’t need to do that. I’ll be staying with friends.
M: You’re lucky. It’s hard to find a place to stay at the beach in August.
W: Just think, in a few days I’ll be swimming every day and lying in the sun and just taking it easy.
M: Don’t tell me about it! It sounds too good.
W: What about you? When are you planning to take your vacation?
M: I don’t know. I should be thinking about it, I guess.
W: What do you like to do?
M: All the things that you are going to be doing. But that's the trouble. I like both summer and winter sports.
W: Well, take part of your vacation and the rest of it in January or February.
(Text 10)
Balloons have been used for sport for about one hundred years. There are two kinds of sport balloons: gas, and hot air. Hot air balloons are safer than gas balloons, which may catch fire. Hot air balloons are preferred by most balloonists in the United States because of their safety. They are also cheaper, and easier to manage than gas balloons. Though a balloon is easily operated, pilots most watch the weather carefully. Sport balloon flights are best early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the wind is light. Over the years, balloonists have tried to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It wasn’t until 1978 that three Americans succeeded. It took them just six days to make their trip from their home in the USA to Pairs, France.
